Performance Max vs Search

What This Page Answers

Performance Max and Search both use Google intent, but they are not interchangeable. This page explains how to use them together without losing visibility into demand capture, expansion, and cannibalization.

Plain English

Search campaigns give you query-level control. Performance Max gives Google broader automation across inventory. Search is usually better for defending or expanding clearly defined query demand. PMax is usually better for letting Google combine shopping, visual, video, discovery, remarketing, and search-like opportunities around a business goal.

How They Should Work Together

Use Search when you need to:

  • Control high-intent keywords.

  • Separate brand and non-brand demand.

  • Protect core query coverage.

  • Test messaging against known intent.

Use PMax when you need to:

  • Scale beyond known keywords.

  • Use product feed signals across surfaces.

  • Let automation find converting users across inventory.

  • Combine creative and feed assets at scale.

Cannibalization Checks

PMax can look strong because it captures easy demand. Before scaling budget, check:

  • Did brand Search volume or efficiency change?

  • Did non-brand Search lose impression share?

  • Did Shopping-only performance change after PMax launched?

  • Are new customer and existing customer results separated?

  • Did blended MER or contribution margin improve?

Practical Setup Judgment

Do not turn every Search problem into a PMax problem. If the issue is weak keyword coverage, poor landing page relevance, or low Quality Score, fix Search. If the issue is scale across product, visual, and discovery surfaces, test PMax with clear conversion values and guardrails.
