A competitor ad tracker is useful when you want to revisit the same advertisers and see which creative is currently available. In Playad, use Inspiration → Following to select relevant advertiser accounts and browse their refreshed ads by platform. Save useful examples in Inspired and keep a short record of what you observed during each review. This page focuses on building a repeatable watchlist routine; use the broader competitor analysis workflow when your main task is to interpret an individual ad or develop a new creative direction.

What you can do

Select and save specific advertiser accounts

In the Following tab, choose Manage competitors to search for an advertiser by name. When the matching account appears, select it and save it. Playad uses that specific advertiser account to keep its ads refreshed in your feed. Your plan may limit the number of competitors you can follow at one time, so choose accounts that are genuinely relevant to your category and your current creative direction.

Browse competitor ads by platform

Once competitors are saved, use the platform selector in Following to focus on the channel that matters most for your review — for example, Meta or TikTok. Browsing stays scoped to your selected accounts and the chosen platform, so you are not wading through unrelated creative. If a competitor has no ads for the current platform selection, Following will return no results for that combination; try adjusting the platform or checking that the correct account was saved.

Save useful references to Inspired

When an ad in Following is worth keeping, use the save action on the ad or its detail view to add it to Inspired. Some ads include multiple media items; use the individual-media or save-all action depending on what you want to retain. Inspired becomes your personal library of competitive references. Saved items remain accessible even when the discovery preview is locked by plan access, so your curated collection stays intact between sessions.

Separate keyword search from account-based review

Following supports two distinct modes: browsing by selected competitor accounts, and searching by keyword. These are intentionally separate. Entering a keyword clears your selected competitors, and selecting competitors clears the keyword. For ongoing competitor tracking, work in account-selection mode — choose your saved accounts and browse their ads directly. Use keyword search when you want to explore a topic broadly rather than watch specific advertisers.

Use saved references as creative starting points

References saved in Inspired are not decoration. When Clone or Clone this ad is available on a reference, choosing it opens Chat with that reference loaded and a request to create an ad for your brand. Image references guide style and layout; video references guide scene structure, pacing, and framing. You then continue the conversation to describe what to keep, what to change, and who the audience is. This connects your competitor review directly to your next creative brief.

How it works

1. Open Inspiration and go to Following

Select the correct team and brand in Playad, then open Inspiration from the navigation. Go to the Following tab. If you have not saved any competitors yet, the tab will be empty — that is expected. The first task is account selection, not browsing.

2. Add competitor accounts via Manage competitors

Choose Manage competitors in the Following tab. Search for the advertiser by name, select the matching account from the results, and save it. Repeat for each competitor you want to follow. Be precise at this step: selecting the wrong account means you will browse the wrong ads. If the account you want does not appear, try a variation of the name. Your plan may cap how many accounts you can save simultaneously.

3. Choose a platform and browse

With your accounts saved, select the platform you want to review — such as Meta or TikTok — using the platform control in Following. The feed then shows ads from your saved competitors on that platform. Scroll through and open individual ads to inspect the creative, format, and any available advertiser details. This is the core of your regular review session.

4. Save references worth keeping

Save ads that raise a useful creative question: an opening you have not tried, a different product framing, or an offer worth understanding. Record why the example matters. Seeing an ad in the feed does not prove that its hook performs well or that it belongs in your own campaign.

5. Maintain your own change log outside Playad

Keep a short review note in your own document: date, account, platform, reference and observed message or format. Compare with your previous notes on the next visit. This is an editorial routine you maintain, not an automatic change report demonstrated by this guide. Write “first observed today” rather than assuming the ad launched today.

6. Clone a strong reference into Chat when ready to create

When a saved reference in Inspired is the right starting point for an upcoming campaign, open it and choose Clone or Clone this ad if available. Chat opens with that reference loaded. Describe what you want to keep, what to change, and the intended audience. Review the proposed flow before continuing — Chat proposing a flow is not the same as generation being complete. Follow the flow's review and generation controls to produce your output.

Example request

I have saved these competitor references in Inspired. Help me compare their opening messages and visual formats. Separate what the ads visibly show from hypotheses about performance, and suggest an original angle for my brand.

Hypothetical example: a DTC skincare brand tracking three competitors

Illustrative example — not a product screenshot or customer result

Input: A hypothetical skincare brand chooses direct competitors that address a similar audience. The reviewer checks the exact advertiser accounts in Manage competitors and uses Meta for the first session.

First review: Save a small set of ads with different opening structures. In a separate note, record the date, advertiser, format and visible message. A note might say “text-led product close-up, first observed in this session.”

Next review: Return to the same account and platform selection. Compare the current feed with the references and notes you kept. Record new observations without assuming that an ad absent today has stopped everywhere.

Creative handoff: When an eligible saved reference suggests a useful structure, open Clone and explain the elements to borrow and the product facts to use. Review the original brief before proceeding. This is a hypothetical routine, not a completed tracking study.

Before you start

Following keyword search and selected competitor accounts are separate modes: entering a keyword clears selected competitors, and selecting competitors clears the keyword.

Account selection matters. Similar advertiser names or a platform with no matching ads can produce a misleading or empty review.

Your plan may limit how many competitors you can follow. Choose a focused set relevant to your category.

The guides describe refreshed competitor ads without promising an exact delivery interval. Revisit the feed and record when you observed an example.

Visible creative is not evidence of competitor spend, conversions or ROAS. Keep performance hypotheses separate from observations.

Saved references are creative inputs. Google video ad cloning is unsupported, and Clone availability depends on the reference.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a competitor to Following?

In the Following tab, choose Manage competitors. Search for the advertiser by name, select the correct account from the results, and save it. Playad then uses that specific advertiser account to keep its ads refreshed in your Following feed. If the account you want does not appear, try a different spelling or a shorter version of the brand name.

Why do my selected competitors disappear when I type a keyword?

Keyword search and competitor account selection are intentionally separate modes in Following. Entering a keyword clears the competitor selection so the search can find ads across advertisers. Selecting competitors clears the keyword. For your regular competitor review, stay in account-selection mode and avoid typing in the keyword field during that session.

How do I keep track of what has changed between review sessions?

Maintain a brief dated note alongside your saved references: advertiser, platform, message, format and what appears different from your last review. Write down observations rather than inferred campaign results. This manual record makes your own review repeatable without assuming an exhaustive archive or automatic change report.

Can I see how much a competitor is spending or how their ads are performing?

No. Following shows you the creative that competitors are running. It does not provide access to spend data, impression volumes, conversion rates, ROAS, or any performance ranking. Those metrics belong to the advertiser and are not available through Playad's competitor tracking.

“We went from 20 hours a week making ads to one, and our ROAS still climbed from 1.5 to 2.34. Playad just does the work better than we did.”
