Most bad diagnoses come from starting in the wrong place. Someone sees a poor CPA, changes the creative, and the problem was tracking.
This is the order that separates causes rather than pattern-matching on the last thing you looked at. Work down it, and stop at the first level that explains what you are seeing.
Start here every time. A large share of "performance problems" are reporting problems, and every hour spent optimizing a measurement artifact is wasted twice.
Check whether your own revenue source still shows orders at a normal rate. If it does, the campaign is fine and your measurement broke.
The second most common error. Ranking five creatives on twenty conversions each is describing randomness, and acting on it produces changes that look decisive and mean nothing.
Before concluding anything, ask how many conversions sit behind the difference you are looking at.
If costs moved and nothing in your account did, the auction changed. This is a different problem with a different response, and it is checkable in minutes.
The test: did CPM rise? If yes, look outward. If CPM is flat, look inward.
Read top-down. A failure at any stage disguises itself as a failure at every stage below it.
impression -> attention -> click -> landing -> conversionLow conversion with a weak hook is not a landing page problem — nobody got far enough for the landing page to matter.
Once you know which level broke, go to the detailed diagnosis.
| Symptom | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Ad rejected or disapproved | Why Your Ad Was Rejected |
| No impressions at all | Why Your Ads Are Not Delivering |
| Impressions falling | Why Your Impressions Dropped |
| Spend stopped | Why Spend Stopped |
| CPC rising | Why Your CPC Increased |
| CPM rising | Why CPM Is High |
| Frequency climbing | Why Your Frequency Is High |
| CPA rising | Why CPA Increased |
| ROAS falling | Why ROAS Dropped |
| Stuck in learning | Why Your Campaign Is Stuck In The Learning Phase |
| Creative decaying | Creative Fatigue Diagnosis |
A finding is not an action. Once you know the cause, the next step is a single ranked change with a stated expectation and a review date.
Measurement, then sample size, then market, then funnel position, then the specific symptom. Skipping to the symptom is how teams fix creative that was never broken.
