AI Background Generator for Product Images
Replace or specify a product image background using Chat and Flow in Playad. Preserve packaging, silhouette and logo while describing the new environment.
Trusted by 6,000+ marketers & founders
An AI background generator can help you explore a different setting for a product you already photographed. In Playad, start in Chat with the source image and a request that separates the background change from the product details to preserve. You can also continue in an available image project on desktop. This guide focuses on generating a revised still image: the new environment should support the product without changing its packaging, identity or message.
What you can do
Prompt-based background replacement via Chat
Attach the original image and describe the replacement environment: surface, light direction, depth, color and visual clutter. Then name the elements to protect, such as the product silhouette, label and logo. Chat can propose a source-connected image editing Flow for review before you continue with generation.
Source-connected editing in Flow
When Chat proposes a Flow, your uploaded product image becomes a source node and the edit step connects to it directly. This keeps the original image visible alongside the revision so you can compare them. For an existing Flow project in Projects, you can open it in the Flow editor and add a connected edit node that targets only the background, preserving the rest of the creative.
Preservation instructions for subject identity
Your prompt should specify what must not change: the product silhouette, packaging structure, label text, logo placement and overall scale. Writing these constraints directly into the request gives the edit node explicit instructions to hold those elements fixed while generating the new environment around them. Review is still required to confirm the subject has not drifted.
Iterative background refinement
After reviewing a generated result, describe what needs to change — lighter background, different surface material, adjusted depth of field — and the assistant connects the latest output as the source for the next edit. Each iteration is a separate connected step in the same Flow, keeping the history of changes traceable.
Compare the revision with the source
Keep the original image as the reference when assessing an edited version. Check contact shadows, reflections, edges and the apparent scale of the product as well as the background itself. A scene can look attractive while misrepresenting packaging, so inspect the actual item separately from the setting.
How it works
1. Open Chat and attach your product image
Select your team and brand and choose New Chat. Attach the image you want to revise. For an existing image project, open Projects on desktop and continue in its editor; the available editing controls depend on the project type. Ask Chat to revise a specific saved result if you are starting from earlier work.
2. Write a background-change request with preservation constraints
Describe the new background specifically — surface type, lighting, setting, color palette. Then list what must stay exactly the same: the product packaging shape, label text, logo, and overall composition. A clear request might read: 'Change only the background to a warm, uncluttered wooden desk with soft natural light from the left. Keep the product bottle, its label text, the logo, and the existing product scale and framing unchanged.' The more specific the background description and the clearer the preservation list, the more useful the first result will be.
3. Review the proposed Flow before running it
Open the proposed Flow card and check that it uses the correct source and describes the intended background-only change. Resolve a missing or wrong reference before continuing. Follow the current Flow’s permission and generation controls, then wait for actual output. Reviewing a plan does not establish that the image has finished.
4. Inspect the generated result
When generation finishes, review the output against your brief. Check that the product silhouette and packaging structure are intact, the label text and logo are legible and correctly positioned, and the new background matches your description. AI model results vary and always need review before the image is used in an ad or published anywhere.
5. Request a targeted correction if needed
If the product drifts or the setting misses the brief, name the specific defect and the details to preserve in a follow-up. For example: “Lighten the counter texture, keep the bag silhouette and restore the original label wording.” Review the revised output again; a completed edit does not by itself prove that every preservation instruction succeeded.
6. Save and find the result in Creations
Accepted outputs are saved as Creations for the current brand. Open Creations to find the generated image, preview it, and download it. The editable Flow stays in Projects so you can return to it, add size variants, or adapt the background for a different placement.
Using Playad: product screens
Example request
Change only the background of my uploaded product image to a warm, uncluttered desk. Preserve the product, label, logo and framing.
Hypothetical example: coffee packaging on a café counter
Illustrative example — not a product screenshot or customer result
Input: A coffee brand supplies a clear, front-facing photo of its actual bag and asks for a warm café setting. The bag shape, roast wording and logo are protected; the surface and distant environment may change.
Brief: “Replace the plain background with a light wooden counter and softly blurred café interior. Keep the product’s original scale, label wording and logo. Do not add props that obscure the bag.”
Flow review: Confirm the selected source is the intended product variant and the planned edit separates the background change from the preservation instructions.
Output review: Compare the bag outline, label text and logo with the source. Check that the base rests naturally on the counter and that shadows match the light. If the wood grain distracts from the product, request that one correction and inspect the next result.
Before you start
This is a prompt-based still-image workflow. Describe the requested change and protected elements explicitly rather than assuming automatic subject isolation.
Fine edges, lettering, reflections and complex packaging can change during generation. Inspect the source and revision side by side before approving the image.
A replacement scene is different from a transparent cutout or separate background layer. If you require a particular file structure, check the actual output before relying on it.
Use an authentic product reference when the image must represent a specific item. A description alone cannot establish exact packaging or label detail.
Open associated editable projects on desktop. Finished media and the source project appear in Creations and Projects respectively.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate background-removal tool before using this workflow?
You can start with an ordinary product image and request a background change in Chat. This guide uses image editing with the original as a reference. Inspect the result around edges, shadows and reflective areas; do not assume the process provides a perfect mask or a transparent cutout.
What should my prompt include to protect the product from changing?
Name the specific elements you want preserved: the packaging shape, any visible label text, the brand logo, and the product scale or framing. A request that only describes the new background without listing preservation constraints gives the model more room to alter the subject. The more explicit the preservation list, the more useful your starting point will be before any correction rounds.
How is this different from creating a product photograph?
Here, the existing image is the anchor and the main request is to change its environment while protecting the subject. A product photography brief can also change shot composition, framing and lighting more broadly. State which of those elements may change so the revision has a clear boundary.
Where do I find the result after generation, and can I reuse the same Flow for a different background?
Completed outputs appear in Creations for the current brand. The Flow that produced them is saved in Projects. Open the Flow in the Flow editor to add another edit node with a different background description — for example, adapting the same product shot to an outdoor setting for a seasonal campaign. Each new background becomes its own connected edit step in the same pipeline.
