IPM is installs per thousand impressions. It measures how hard a creative pulls, independent of bid and budget, and it is the standard creative efficiency metric in mobile user acquisition.
IPM = (installs / impressions) x 1000IPM sits between CTR and CVR rather than replacing either. A creative can earn clicks and lose people at the store listing; IPM captures the whole path from impression to install in one number.
IPM usually moves before CPI does.
When a creative starts losing pull, IPM declines while CPI still looks acceptable, because the bidding system compensates by buying different impressions. By the time cost reflects the problem, you have spent through the warning. That lead time is the main reason to watch it.
IPM figures quoted across sources are usually not comparable to yours. It varies by network, geo, placement, app category, and creative format, and each of those shifts it enough to make cross-source comparison meaningless.
Compare against your own baseline, holding network, geo, and format constant. A creative's IPM against your other creatives in the same conditions is informative. Its IPM against a published industry figure is not.
IPM falling while impressions rise. Usually audience saturation or creative fatigue. Check frequency before concluding the creative is weak.
High IPM, poor retention. The creative is promising something the app does not deliver. That is a message-market fit problem, not a creative win.
High IPM, high CPI. The creative pulls but the auction is expensive. A bidding or competition issue, not a creative one.
IPM varying wildly between networks. Expected. Do not average across networks and treat the result as one number.
On Meta and TikTok, install data is reported by the platform and typically also by your MMP, and the two will differ because of attribution windows and rules. Decide which is authoritative before comparing creatives.
On ad networks serving heavily on video and playable inventory, IPM is often the primary creative ranking metric and drives how much delivery a creative receives. A weak IPM there constrains volume directly, not just efficiency.
IPM is a column in Creative Performance, alongside spend, CPA, ROAS, CTR, CVR, and hook rate. Sort by IPM when the question is which creative pulls, and by an outcome column when the question is which creative earns. Install volume across platforms is also available in Dashboards as a channel installs trend.
Use IPM to rank creative pull within matched conditions, and always pair it with a retention or revenue read before scaling. IPM tells you a creative works. It does not tell you the users were worth acquiring.
