Dwell time is how long someone stayed with your ad before scrolling on — attention without action.
It matters because most people who notice an ad do not click it. Click-based metrics cannot distinguish someone who ignored you from someone who read the whole thing and was not ready. Dwell time can.
In a feed, the default behavior is to keep scrolling. Stopping is a decision, even a brief one.
That makes dwell an early signal of whether creative earns attention, available before you have enough conversions to say anything statistically. For a new concept in its first day, dwell often tells you more than CPA does.
It is also the metric closest to what actually happens in most impressions, which are seen by people who will never click anything.
Genuine interest. The person is reading or watching. This is the intended reading.
Or confusion. People also linger on things they do not understand. A complex or unclear ad can post high dwell and poor everything else.
Or an unresolved question. They stayed because the ad raised something and did not answer it. Sometimes that is good tension, sometimes it is a missing call to action.
High dwell with low click-through is worth investigating rather than celebrating. It usually means the ad held attention and did not convert it — which is a fixable and specific problem.
Low dwell is less ambiguous: the ad did not earn a pause. Almost always an opening problem — the first frame, the first line, the thumbnail.
This is the same diagnosis a weak hook rate gives, arrived at from a different direction.
Dwell is upstream of every other creative metric:
impression -> dwell -> engagement -> click -> conversionA problem at any stage is often caused upstream. Low conversion with low dwell is not a landing page problem; nobody got far enough for the landing page to matter.
This is why reading the funnel from the top is more efficient than starting at the outcome and working back.
Use dwell as an early read on whether creative earns attention, then check whether that attention converts. High dwell with low click-through is a specific, fixable problem — and it is invisible to every click-based metric you have.
